Amazon memberships and free trials, compared

Amazon runs a dozen services under names that overlap, and every one of them opens with a free trial. This section sorts them by what you would actually use them for, says what happens the day the trial ends, and flags the condition each one hides in its terms.

How this section works

Amazon sells a dozen services under names that overlap, and the free trials all look the same from the outside. Some are included the moment you have Prime, some are billed separately on top of it, and two of them are free lists that pay you back in gift cards rather than content.

We have grouped them the way people actually meet them: what you read, what you watch, and what a family signs up for. Each page compares the options side by side, says what happens when the trial ends, and points out the condition that catches people out.

The rule that applies to all of them

Every free trial here rolls into a paid subscription unless you cancel, and Amazon judges eligibility by account and payment card, not by email address. If you have had a trial of the same service in the past twelve months, you will usually be charged from day one instead.

Set a reminder for the day before the trial ends. That single habit is the difference between a trial that costs nothing and a subscription you notice three months later on a statement.

Frequently asked questions

Are these trials really free?

They are free for the trial period and then renew at the standard price unless you cancel. Cancelling during the trial keeps access until the trial ends in most cases.

Can I take the same trial twice?

Usually not within twelve months. Amazon checks the account and the payment card, so a new email address on the same card does not reset it.

Do I need Prime for all of this?

No. Kindle Unlimited, Audible, Music Unlimited and Kids+ are sold separately. Prime Video, Prime Reading and Music Prime are parts of Prime rather than products of their own.
