Kindle Unlimited, Audible and Prime Reading, compared
Three Amazon services that sound alike and work nothing alike. Here is what each one lends you, what it costs after the trial, and the catch in each.
| Service | Free trial | After the trial | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audible | 30 days | £5.99 a month | One audiobook credit a month, plus unlimited listening to the included Audible catalogue and podcasts. |
| Kindle Unlimited | 30 days | £9.49 a month | Borrowing from over a million enrolled ebooks, thousands with audio narration, and a rotating set of magazines. |
| Prime Reading | Included with Prime | Included with Prime | A small rotating library of ebooks, magazines and comics at no extra cost once you have Prime. |
Prices are Amazon's own, checked on 26 September 2026.
Three services, three different promises
Audible is an audiobook subscription: a credit each month that buys any title outright, plus a catalogue you can listen to while you are a member. Kindle Unlimited is a borrowing library for ebooks, where you keep nothing once you leave. Prime Reading is a small rotating shelf that comes free with Prime.
That difference matters more than the price. A credit-based service suits someone who wants specific new releases. A borrowing library suits someone who reads widely and does not mind what turns up. The free shelf suits someone who wants something for a flight and has Prime anyway.
The catalogue question nobody checks first
Kindle Unlimited only covers titles publishers have enrolled. The library is genuinely large, but a lot of headline bestsellers from major publishers are missing, and self-published fiction is heavily represented.
There is a two-minute test worth doing before any trial. Think of three books you actually intend to read, search for each one on Amazon, and look for the Kindle Unlimited badge on the listing. If none of the three are in, the trial will end in disappointment no matter how big the catalogue is.
When each one pays for itself
Audible works out cheaper than buying audiobooks if you finish roughly one a month, because a single credit covers a title that usually costs more than the monthly fee on its own. If you finish one book a quarter, buying individually is cheaper and you should cancel between purchases.
Kindle Unlimited needs about two borrowed books a month to beat buying them. Prime Reading costs nothing extra, so the only question there is whether the rotating shelf happens to hold something you want.
Cancelling, and the twelve-month rule
All three are cancelled from your Amazon account rather than through customer service, and cancelling stops the renewal rather than clawing anything back. Audible purchases made with credits stay in your library after you leave; Kindle Unlimited borrows disappear.
Trials are for people who have not had one on the same account or card in the past twelve months. If you are unsure whether an old trial counts, the signup page tells you before it charges anything.
The offers, and the catch in each
Audible
30 days, then £5.99 a month
One audiobook credit a month, plus unlimited listening to the included Audible catalogue and podcasts.
New joiners who meet Audible's terms can take three months at a promotional rate instead of the trial. The offer runs to 16 December 2026.
Worth knowing: A credit buys one book of any price, so the value depends entirely on finishing roughly a book a month.

30 days, then £9.49 a month
Borrowing from over a million enrolled ebooks, thousands with audio narration, and a rotating set of magazines.
Worth knowing: The catalogue is limited to titles publishers have enrolled, so plenty of big-name bestsellers are not in it. Search for three books you actually want before you commit.

Included with Prime
A small rotating library of ebooks, magazines and comics at no extra cost once you have Prime.
Worth knowing: It is a fraction of the Kindle Unlimited catalogue. Treat it as a bonus, not a replacement.

Which is better value, Kindle Unlimited or Audible?
They solve different problems. Audible is cheaper per audiobook if you finish about one a month. Kindle Unlimited is better value if you read at least two enrolled ebooks a month and are happy to read whatever is in the library.
Do I keep Audible books if I cancel?
Titles you bought with a credit stay in your library. The extra catalogue you can listen to as a member goes away when the membership ends.
Is Prime Reading the same as Kindle Unlimited?
No. Prime Reading is a much smaller rotating selection included with Prime. Kindle Unlimited is a separate paid subscription with a far larger catalogue.
Do I need a Kindle device?
No. Both Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading work in the free Kindle app on a phone, tablet or computer, and Audible has its own app.
Can I use one subscription across the family?
Household sharing rules differ by service and change from time to time, so check the current terms on the signup page rather than assuming.
