Our verdict
Buy the JBL Charge 6 if you want the longer battery, a built-in power bank and the bigger sound for a garden, campsite or shared room. Buy the JBL Flip 7 if you'd rather carry something much smaller and lighter that clips onto a bag. Both are IP68 rated and drop-resistant from 1 metre by JBL's description, both support Auracast and AI Sound Boost, and both use Bluetooth 5.4. So the real decision is size and battery against portability, not features.
Which one is for you?
- The JBL Flip 7 suits people who want a speaker for the beach bag, the commute or a flat, and who value a compact body and a PushLock carabiner clip. Read our full look at the JBL Flip 7, Wireless Portable Bluetooth →
- The JBL Charge 6 suits people who want longer playtime, a bigger sound and the ability to top up their phone from the speaker. Read our full look at the JBL Harman JBL Charge 6, Wireless Portable →
Size and weight
This is the biggest difference. A JBL retailer spec table lists the Flip 7 at 182.5 x 69.5 x 71.5 mm and the Charge 6 at 228.8 x 98.5 x 94.0 mm, so the Charge is clearly the larger body. Weights are quoted inconsistently across the pages we opened, so we won't give a gram figure for either.
That matters day to day. The Flip 7 slides into a rucksack side pocket or hangs from a bag. The Charge 6 is a speaker you pick up and carry by its handle strap.
Battery and power bank
JBL's listings quote up to 14 hours for the Flip 7, plus 2 hours with Playtime Boost. The Charge 6 quotes up to 24 hours, plus 4 hours with Playtime Boost, and 150 minutes from a 10-minute fast charge. Playtime Boost trades some bass for longer hours.
Only the Charge 6 has a built-in power bank, so you can charge a phone from it. The Flip 7 can't. If you're away for a weekend with no plug, that's a practical reason to choose the Charge.
What they share
Both are listed as IP68 waterproof and dustproof and drop-resistant from up to 1 metre, with the same note from JBL that they're made for good times, not roughhousing. Both use Bluetooth 5.4, both support Auracast so you can link them to other Auracast-enabled speakers, and both list AI Sound Boost, which JBL says keeps sound clean at loud volume. A JBL retailer page says the Flip 7's USB-C port supports lossless playback from a compatible source.
Neither needs a subscription to work.
Carrying and styling
JBL's Flip 7 listing describes its PushLock system, which takes interchangeable accessories so you can clip, attach or hand-carry it, with a loop and carabiner included. The Charge 6 has a removable handle strap that you can swap, or attach a keychain to. If you like the idea of a clip-on speaker, the Flip is built for it.
Sound
JBL describes the Flip 7 as having a new tweeter dome design for clear bass at loud volume, and the Charge 6 as using JBL Pro Sound for rich, powerful bass. The retailer spec table lists a frequency response starting at 60 Hz for the Flip 7 and 56 Hz for the Charge 6, and describes the Charge as the more punchy, bass-heavy of the two for larger spaces. A bigger enclosure usually moves more air, so for a garden party or a big room, the Charge is the better bet. For a desk, bedroom or beach towel, the Flip is plenty.
Who should skip both
If you need something tiny for a desk or pocket, look at the smaller models in the speaker range, such as the Go series covered in our Go 4 vs Go 5 comparison. If you're after headphones instead, see JBL Tune 520BT vs Sony WH-CH520.
