Our verdict
Buy the Series 11 if you want an ECG, the Blood Oxygen app, hypertension notifications, a brighter display and the longer battery Apple quotes. Buy the SE 3 if you mainly want fitness tracking, sleep tracking, safety features and the always-on display from the lower tier. Apple's own page now lists Series 12 as the newest Series, so neither is the latest, but both come from the same 2025 generation.

Health sensors: the biggest gap
Apple's UK comparison page lists the ECG app, the Blood Oxygen app and hypertension notifications for the Series 11, and none of them for the SE 3. That's the main reason to pay for the higher tier. Both models list a sleep score, and the SE 3 additionally lists sleep apnoea notifications, which the comparison page doesn't show for Series 11.
The SE 3 isn't empty on health: Apple's spec page lists a second-generation optical heart sensor and a temperature sensor, which Apple says isn't intended for medical use. Health features can vary by region, so check Apple's feature availability page for the UK.
Battery and charging
Apple quotes up to 24 hours of normal use on the Series 11 and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. The SE 3 is quoted at up to 18 hours, or up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. These are Apple's figures from its own testing.
For the SE 3, Apple says fast charging gets to 80% in about 45 minutes, and 15 minutes gives up to 8 hours of normal use. We couldn't verify a matching charging figure for Series 11 on a page we could open, so we're not comparing charging speed.
Display, build and water resistance
Both have an always-on Retina display. The Series 11 is quoted at up to 2,000 nits with a wide-angle OLED, against up to 1,000 nits on the SE 3. That matters most outdoors in bright sun.
Cases differ too. Series 11 comes in 46mm or 42mm, in aluminium or titanium. SE 3 is 44mm or 40mm and aluminium only. Both are rated 50 metres, but Apple lists Series 11 for swimming and snorkelling and the SE 3 for swimming only. Both list GPS and Cellular options; cellular needs a wireless plan.
Compatibility and who should skip both
