Our verdict

If you own an iPhone, get the AirTag: it plugs into Find My, uses the huge Apple device network, and offers Precision Finding with an iPhone 11 or later. If anyone in your household uses Android, or you want a tracker tied to the Life360 family app, get the Tile. An AirTag needs an iPhone or iPad to set up, and Android phones cannot pair with it. Note this AirTag is the first generation; Apple has since released a second one.

Which one is for you?

Phone compatibility decides most of it

The AirTag requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later, plus an Apple Account, according to Wikipedia. Android phones cannot pair with it. They can only scan for unknown AirTags travelling with them, using NFC or Apple's Tracker Detect app.

The Tile has native apps for both iOS and Android (Wikipedia), so it is the only one of the two that an Android owner can actually use.

How each one finds lost things

Apple says nearby devices in the Find My network relay an AirTag's location, anonymously and encrypted, and the listing adds a built-in speaker, Lost Mode, and Precision Finding using Ultra Wideband on iPhone 11 or later (Wikipedia excludes the SE models there). Apple's current AirTag page cites more than a billion devices in the network.

The Tile listing describes ringing the tracker or finding it in the free app, and using it the other way round: press the Tile to make your phone ring, even when silenced. It adds an SOS alert to loved ones and can sit inside Life360 on a shared family map. Network size and Premium features vary, and we could not confirm current Tile subscription terms, so check the Tile app before relying on extras.

Battery and water resistance

Wikipedia lists the first-generation AirTag with a replaceable CR2032 battery lasting about a year and an IP67 rating, which Apple's own AirTag page also gives for the current model. The Tile listing does not state battery type or life in the text we read, so we have left those out.

Which generation of AirTag is this

This page covers the first-generation AirTag. Wikipedia dates the second generation to January 2026, with a newer U2 chip and louder speaker. If you are weighing the two Apple models, see AirTag 2 vs AirTag 1, or AirTag 2 vs Galaxy SmartTag2 for Android. More key finders are in the tracker category.

Questions people ask

Is AirTag or Tile better?

AirTag is better for iPhone owners because of Find My and Precision Finding. Tile is better if you use Android or want Life360 integration.

Does AirTag work with Android?

No. Android phones cannot pair with or use an AirTag for finding items. They can only detect an unknown AirTag nearby, through NFC or the Tracker Detect app.

Does Tile work with iPhone?

Yes. Tile has apps for both iOS and Android, so it works on iPhone as well.

Is an AirTag waterproof?

It is rated IP67, which Apple describes as up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes, and says resistance can decline with wear.

Does an AirTag battery need replacing?

Yes, eventually. It uses a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell that Apple says lasts more than a year.
