Both dolls score highly with huge review counts, but they play very differently. Mattel's Rapunzel (£6.93 at the time of writing, 4.7 stars, 24,127 reviews) is a posable fashion doll with a removable skirt, shoes and tiara, simple, screen-free dress-up play. The Gabby's Dollhouse mermaid (£20.99, 4.8 stars) is a 35.5cm interactive doll with a light-up body, 14 sounds and phrases, plus a tail that changes colour in warm water, so it works at bath time too. The Rapunzel is terrific value for quiet imaginative play; the Gabby doll earns its extra £14 with features. Match the doll to the child's favourite show and you can't go wrong.
